The Institute for Mediterranean Humanities and Social Studies is an explicitly interdisciplinary institute which combines researchers in multiple fields of humanities and social studies (sociology, communication, philosophy, architecture and spatial planning). Various research activities of the Institute mainly focus on investigating the phenomena of cultural and intercultural studies, ethnicity, multiculturalism, interculturalism, and transculturalism, migrations, everyday and family life, gender studies, marginal and minority groups, as well as ethics, sustainable development, etc. Methodologically and research wise, the Institute is closely connected with the Public Opinion Centre (UP SRC).
